History-making Hurricane Noel Flight

As an Aerosonde heads into the hurricane following its launch from Naval Air Station Key West, control will be transferred to our Ground Control Station within the National Hurricane Centre (NHC), Miami. Operating out of the NHC places control of the aircraft where it is needed most, allowing very close realtime collaboration with researches and forecasters. Data being measured by the Aerosonde on critical hurricane parameters such as wind speed and pressure will be sent live into the NHC computer systems, helping forecaters refine predictions of hurricane intensity and speed.

Flying from the Aerosonde test facility in western Victoria, a Mk4 Aerosonde UAV today set an unofficial¹ world endurance record of 38 hrs and 48 minutes. The current official record is 30 hrs and 24 minutes held by the Northrop Grumman Ryan Aeronautical RQ-4A "Global Hawk". The flight took place as a cold front passed through the region.
